Description of The Meridian Club:
There have been only one or two necktie sightings on Pine Cay in the last decade--but pelicans, frigate birds, Jojo the resident dolphin, and marine life such as spotfin angelfish, indigo hamlets, and eagle rays are daily occurrences. This is the habitat of the Meridian Club, where shoes are optional, the only guest phone is in a thatched-roof hut, and TVs and cars are unheard of. The environmentally conscious club pays careful attention both to its pristine natural surroundings and to the comfort of its lucky few guests. Don't look for lavish amenities here: Its 12 rooms and secluded Sand Dollar Cottage are "famously plain"--but all face the ocean across a powder-soft two-mile-long beach shared with a mere handful of other island residents. Each room, cooled by ceiling fans and trade winds, features separate bedroom and lounge areas, a screened porch, indoor and outdoor showers, and a small library of books. "Barefoot elegance" is the dress code even at afternoon tea on the poolside terrace and at candlelit four-course dinners indoors or in the garden.
Entertainment here is au naturel as well. R&R--reading and relaxation, preferably rocking in a hammock or lounging on the beach--rank high among the preferred pastimes, but the Meridian Club also offers a wonderful menu of outward-bound activities. You can stroll along a nature trail, sail or kayak, or set off by bike or motorized golf cart as far afield as the private island's 800 acres allow. Absolutely don't miss the chance to snorkel or scuba; amid the teeming reefs around the Turks and Caicos, you'll feel like youre swimming through an aquarium. The club also arranges fishing and whale-watching trips, birdwatching and sightseeing excursions to nearby cays, and a monthly The Meridian Club is a small, casual, but elegant resort on what is basically a private island in the Turks & Caicos Islands group. Air taxi is the means of transportation from the airport in Providenciales. It's important to schedule your flights so you arrive into Provo before dusk otherwise, you will need to arrange for a stay over on Provo. American Airlines has a couple of daily flights to Providenciales from Miami; the early flight will assure your arrival on Pine Cay same day. The air taxi from Provo to Pine Cay takes about fifteen minutes.
This resort is the hideaway type where you can do nothing but lounge on the beach all week, or take advantage of daily excursions and the recreational equipment. There are twelve rooms; most are duplexes, fronting on a 2-mile, white sandy beach that is nearly deserted. The island also contains about twenty-five homes along the beach front, some of which can be leased on a weekly basis. The pool, dining room, and bar are the centers of social activity for those staying in the homes as well as the rooms.
We found the food to be excellent. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, taken around the pool. Dinners are sit-down in an elegant dining room, but casual dress. Coats and ties are not encouraged. Going barefoot is. The husband and wife management team were very helpful and the staff courteous. The resort has a small general store and there is a privately-owned boutique within a few minutes' walk. This is the type of place where you do get to know the staff and the other guests.
The recreational equipment includes small sailboats, bicycles, and golf carts for exploring the island. There are no automobiles. While the water is clear, there are no snorkeling spots directly on the beach. The resort provides a daily morning boat trip to an offshore reef about twenty minutes away for two hours' snorkeling, but some days the water is too rough to go. There are excursions to Providenciales for shopping and to other nearby islands like Little Water Cay , a sanctuary for Iguanas. There is also the evening "glow worm" excursion monthly after the full moon.
Rooms are very comfortable, with electricity, hot showers, comfortable beds and sitting areas, and screened-in porches. There is no TV or phone in the rooms. Fax is the main form of communication with the outside world. Bring books.
This is a delightful resort with many return guests.
